Where to stay at Silencio Beach

Staying a short walk from Silencio Beach (Playa del Silencio) means arriving on foot, no hunting for parking, and having it almost to yourself early in the morning or at sunset.

Silencio Beach

Silencio Beach lies in Castañeras, a small village in the municipality of Cudillero. It is a shell-shaped cove of around 500 metres of pebbles and sand, enclosed by tall cliffs that shelter it from wind and noise. Hence the name: the waves arrive softened and all you hear is the sea.

It used to be known as Gavieiru, after the many gulls that visited it. Today it is also one of Spain’s great cormorant refuges, and the rocky islets off the shore are among the most photographed sights on the Asturian coast.

Getting there from the house

From Villa Playa del Silencio it’s about a 15-minute walk along a path through meadows that joins the cliff trail. The last stretch is steep with steps, so comfortable shoes are a good idea.

In summer the small car park in Castañeras fills up early. Staying in the village means you can leave the car: head down whenever you like and come back to the house for lunch.

Tips for enjoying it

  • Go first thing in the morning or late in the afternoon — that’s when the beach truly lives up to its name.
  • At low tide more sand appears and you can wander between the rocks; check the tide table before heading down.
  • Water shoes or sandals make the pebbles much more comfortable.
  • There’s no beach bar: bring water and snacks, and take your rubbish back with you.
  • The viewpoint at the top of the trail offers a spectacular sunset.

Best time to visit

From June to September the water is warmer and the days are long. In spring and autumn there are far fewer people and the light on the cliffs is beautiful — the best time if you’re after peace and coastal walks.
